Code: HOH601 SYNTHESIS OF POLYMER
Equip students with basic knowledge of polymer synthesis that will help them to develop new materials.
Equip students with basic knowledge of polymer synthesis, such as chain polymerization (radical, ionic), living polymerization, ring opening polymerization, stepwise polymerization.
Teach students to understand kinetic of polymerization, thermodynamic of reaction, mechanism, average molecular weight and distribution, morphology of polymer.

Impart the knowledge of structures, physical states and physical properties of polymers.
Identify the correlation of polymer structures and properties
Provide basic concepts of tools/equipments for testing physical properties of polymers

Make students aware of various basic requirements like matrix, reinforcing fillers and additives, etc. in (nano)composite manufacture

Provide hands on experience on principal polymer synthesis, such as emulsion, solution and bulk polymerization
Provide opportunity to prepare a reaction, to isolate and characterize polymer product
Provide hands on experience on gelation and controlling the process of hardening of thermoset
Provide hands on experience for molecular weight determination of prepared polymer by viscosity method

Provide hands on experience on polymer processing, such as thermoset, thermoplastic and rubber
Provide hands on experience in polymer mechanical testing, such as tensile strength, impact strength, flexural strength

Provide basic knowledge on basic terminologies such as raw rubber, vulcanisate, peptizers, antioxidants, accelerators, activators, carbon black reinforcement, etc, various processes involved in isolation of natural rubber, physics of raw and vulcanized rubber, outline of raw rubber technology – concepts of mastication, compounding, vulcanization in brief
