CODE: HOH201                   BASIC ORGANIC STEREOCHEMISTRY

    Basic Organic Stereochemistry is an important course of Organic Chemistry major. It studies the structures of molecules in three-dimensional space under given conditions.

     The content of this course includes the basic topics of organic stereochemistry such as steric structures of organic moelecules, conformational isomerism of acyclic and cylic compounds, structural isomerism including geometrical and optical isomerism. This course basically provides the fundamental knowledge of Organic Stereochemistry.

 

CODE: HOH202                    ORGANIC REACTION MECHANISMS 1

     This is a mandatory course for students whose major is organic chemistry. This course is on the basic matters of organic reactions as well as the mechanism and the stereochemistry of nucleophilic substitution at saturated carbon, elimination reaction, and the addition to carbon-carbon double bond.

 

CODE: HOH203                    ORGANIC REACTION MECHANISMS 2

    This course provides students basic knowledge on organic reaction mechanism so that they can use these theories to explain and propose the mechanism for a given reaction as well as to anticipate the factors that contribute to the reaction. This course is on the basic matters of organic machenism and stereochemistry of the attack of nuclophile at carbonyl, rearrangement and electrophilic aromatic.

 

CODE: HOH204                    ORGANIC SYNTHESIS

    This course is intended for senior students of Organic Chemistry major. It provides the students with the basic knowledge on reactions in organic synthesis, such as bond formation, bond cleavage, functional group transfomation, oxidation, reduction, funtional group protection, and total synthesis.

 

CODE: HOH205                    CHEMISTRY OF NATURAL PRODUCTS

    This is a compulsory subject of organic chemistry graduate students. This course provides information about the origin, ecological role, isolation, structure determination, biosynthesis, biological activity, synthetic, semi-synthetic, and application of natural compounds belonging to the group of terpenoids, steroids, phenols, and alkaloids.

 

CODE: HOH206                    BIOCHEMISTRY

     Provide basic knowledge about the structure, function and metabolism of biological compounds such as proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, nucleic acids, ... In particular, focusing on the role of the enzyme or receptor to understand the enzyme-catalyzed chemical reactions and cell signaling. Moreover, protein synthesis is also mentioned along with the concept of recombinant proteins and genetic engineering techniques.

 

CODE: HOH207                   ADVANCED ORGANIC PRACTICE 1

        This is an advanced organic chemistry practice course which helps students consolidate the knowledge and improve their practice skills in laboratory that they have learned in the two previous pratice courses, HOH118 and HOH117. In addition, the course will also help students develop the ability of analysis, evaluation, design, method selections, experimental procedure selections, in order to organize activities not only related to organic chemistry researches but also other researches. In addition the course help students get familiar with the knowledge which can apply to the real life.

The course provide the knowledge about :

  • The process of extracting natural compounds: essential oils, alkaloids, ....
  • The process of organic synthesis.
  • The process of isolating and purifying the product.
  • The process and analytical methods of extracted products (qualitative, quantitative).
  • The process of determining nitrogen content (protein) in food (soy sauce).

 CODE: HOH240                  TECHNOLOGY OF ORGANIC CHEMISTRY   

       This course is one of selected courses for third year students in chemistry. This course equips students with the basic knowledge of organic chemistry reactions that was used both in industry and laboratory and it also provides the skills for setting up a organic chemistry reaction. The course has a concentration on the technology of setting up the chemical reactions such as the halogenation, sulfonation, nitration, oxidation, reduction, esterification, hydrolysis, alkylation and acylation.

                                               

CODE: HOH245                  PETROCHEMICAL SYNTHESIS          

      This course is applied for fourth year students in organic chemistry department. Today most of the chemical industry are using raw materials from petroleum sources. This course describes the processes of transforming crude oil into useful products such as: plastics, textiles, dyes , detergents, flavorings, agricultural chemicals, industrial chemicals, etc. The technological process and modern techniques are also investigated in this course. This course also provides students the basic information and knowlege about the petrochemical technology.

 

CODE: HOH249                 PIGMENTS AND DYES

       This course is applied for fourth year students in organic chemistry department. This course provides students with basic knowledge about the chemical structure and the physical characteristics of the organic dyes, textiles, paper, as well as the knowledge in the field of producing dyed fabrics and printed papers. It is quite necessary knowlege which can help students find a suitable job in the company related to the course.

 

CODE: HOH250                DETERGENTS AND PERSONAL CARE  PRODUCTS

       This course is applied for fourth year students in organic chemistry department.. This course provides students with basic knowledge of surfactant, detergent and personal care products. Students will be introduced on the operational mechanism and the formula of the different types of detergent. The basic different features in the composition of the different products will be focused.

        Equiping students with the knowledge of chemical applications in the field of producing detergents and personal care products, as well as a specific career orientation.

 

CODE: HOH252              DRUG QUALITY CONTROL PRACTICE

        This course introduces the knowledge of drug quality testing (including test materials, semi-finished and finished product testing) in production, storage, circulation and use of drugs. The course also introduces the GLP laboratory management system ; it meets the requirements when working in drug quality control laboratory of the pharmaceutical plant, drug testing center.

 

CODE :HOH243               ESSENTIAL OIL

       This course provides students with fundamental background on essential oil chemistry as well as the process and methodology for studying a given essential oil resource:

  • Knowing the classification and nomenclature of plants.
  • Understanding the definition of essential oil, the origin of essential oils.
  • Knowing and understanding the methods for the production and extraction of essential oils in laboratory and industry.
  • Knowing the understanding the methods for analysis of essential oils: specifically, analyzing the physicochemical properties and chemical composition.
  • Understanding the chemistry of various compounds in essential oils.
  • Understanding the biosynthetic pathways of some compounds in essential oils and the hemisynthetic processes of some constituents in essential oils.
  • Knowing and understanding of testing biological activity
  • Knowing the real life applications of essential oils and the proper methods for storing and using essential oils.
  • Approaching the knowledge on new technologies of essential oil study: microencapsulation and nanoencapsulation.

 

Code :HOH241               ORGANIC ANALYTIC CHEMISTRY     

     The course equips students with the knowledge of qualitative analysis and quantitative organic compounds, including:

  • Qualitative analysis methods: sensory, morphology, physical properties, chemical reactions and physicochemical methods (spectroscopy, chromatography).
  • Quantitative analysis method: chemical analysis (analysis of mass and volume) and analysis tools (physics and physical chemistry). Internal standard method - foreign standards.
  • The sample preparation methods for the analytical processes.
  • The separation technique, isolation technique, purification technique via : precipitation, crystallization, filtration, extraction, distillation, chromatography, ....
  • Characterization techniques using chromatographic methods (TLC, HPLC, GC, ..) and spectroscopy (IR, UV, NMR, MS).
  • Elemental analysis techniques.
  • Technical analysis of organic compounds related to functional groups.
  • Technical analysis of natural compounds
  • The application of organic analytic chemistry on the actual products.
